Take some threads of two colors. Several of one color – for the letters and one of the other color – for the background. We are going to call them the background string and the letter strings. The background string should be the longest, so better take a whole ball.
Start making forward knots with the background string as on the picture. When you reach the end of the row, start making backward knots and again, upon reaching the end, make forward knots in the next row until you reach the place where there should be a letter. At this place take the letter threads and make some backward knots on the background string. What I have written may seem complicated to do at first, but you give it a try, it’s not that hard. Just remember, when a background string meets a letter string the knots should change their direction.
