A dream catcher is an Indian talisman that protects a sleeping person from evil spirits. It is a handmade object which is made out of a willow hoop and a net or web woven in it. Feathers and beads are also added to the construction. It is usually hung above the head of the bed.
According to one of the legends, an Indian Lakota tribe elder climbed to the top of a mountain and there he had a vision. An old teacher of wisdom, Iktomi, appeared before him in the form of a spider. While they were talking, the spider bent a willow branch, decorated it with a bird’s feather and began to weave a web inside. He said that this willow hoop symbolizes the circle of life of a human being: a person is born, grows up, looks after his own children and eventually dies. Thus the circle closes up.
When the spider finished his web he left a small hole in the middle and said: “There are a lot of paths in our life and each person chooses his own one. Many different forces there are too: some good which help us take the right path and some evil which make us step off the right path. This web will help you fulfill your dreams and goals in life. It catches your good ideas, while the bad ones go through the hole.”
Since then the people hung these dream catches above their beds so it could catch their good dreams.
